CERVICAL CANCER AND ONCOTIC COLPOCYTOLOGY – A LITERATURE REVIEW

Cervical cancer in Brazil affects about 17,000 new patients every year, with a fatality rate of approximately 24%. When diagnosed early, it has a very high cure rate, which can reach 100%. The initial screening method for early detection is the colpocytological examination, also called the Pap smear, and through the same possible to detect epithelial and cellular changes that may be precursors of malignancy a fact that improves the prognosis of patients. The present study is a bibliographic review, which aims to facilitate access to knowledge about the exam, the possible changes to be detected by it, and the challenges that surround it.
