BEYOND BLUEPRINTS: EVALUATING THE EFFICACY OF GREEN BUILDING RATINGS IN SOUTH-WESTERN NIGERIA

The global imperative for environmental sustainability has propelled the construction industry towards the adoption of green building practices. This study delves into the efficacy of green building ratings in South-Western Nigeria, aiming to move beyond theoretical blueprints and evaluate real-world outcomes. Our research employs a dual-method approach, combining quantitative analysis of a representative sample of green-rated buildings with qualitative assessments through interviews and site visits. The quantitative phase scrutinizes energy efficiency, water conservation, and other environmental parameters, while the qualitative phase engages architects, builders, and occupants to unearth practical challenges and benefits. Our findings offer a comprehensive understanding of green building performance in the region. Notably, the environmental analysis reveals insights into energy and water efficiency, waste management, and other key parameters. The qualitative assessments shed light on socio-economic implications, outlining the benefits and challenges associated with green building practices. This study contributes nuanced insights to the discourse on sustainable development in South-Western Nigeria, offering recommendations for policymakers, builders, and stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of green building ratings. By bridging the gap between theoretical aspirations and practical realities, this research provides a valuable foundation for future construction projects in the pursuit of holistic sustainability.
