SPIRITUAL DIMENSIONS AND IDEOLOGICAL CONTENT IN THE TABUIK TRADITION OF THE PARIAMAN COMMsUNITY

The purpose of writing this article is to reveal “Spiritual Dimensions and Ideological Content in the Tabuik Tradition of the Pariaman Society”. Qualitatively, dimensions are used to indicate the size or degree of ‘something’ enclosed in ‘something’. Spirituality deals with all aspects of human life which is a means of self-enlightenment in living life to achieve the purpose and meaning of life. The spiritual dimension implies the size or degree of something that examines all aspects of human life; including ideology which involves ideas or concepts that are always fought for – including in the tabuik tradition. The tabuik tradition is held annually in the Pariaman community, commemorating the tragedy of the death of Husein ibn Ali who was killed by Yazid bin Umaiyah’s soldiers in Padang Karbala on the 10th of Muharam. The procession was followed by the roar of tabuik music; people call it gandang tasa. Qualitative methods that rely on researchers as data collection instruments are accomplished through three stages of research, namely observation, documentation, and interviews. Data analysis is based on a phenomenological approach to access a comprehensive picture of the phenomenon of the research subject. This study concludes that the spiritual dimension in the tabuik tradition contains ideological content.
