Study on the Ecological Sensitivity of Fangji Island in Maoming City by Using RS and GIS

This study aims to realize the ecological sensitivity of Fangji Island in Maoming City. The analysis materials include 2013 Landsat 8 Remote Sensing (RS) images, a 12.5 m resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM), 2021 global land use/land cover (LULC) data, and geographic vector data such as the boundaries of the study area.  This study combines RS and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies for analyzing four major factors that include slope, aspect, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and land type. The sensitivity evaluation of every single factor was conducted using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and weighted superposition methods to obtain a comprehensive evaluation of the ecological environment sensitivity of the island. The results show that the overall ecological sensitivity of Fangji Island is highly sensitive, and it is suggested that the tourism industry can be reasonably developed in areas with relatively flat terrain and low sensitivity. For moderately sensitive areas near lakes, water sources should be protected to control island source pollution. Human activities should be strictly controlled in areas with high vegetation coverage and high sensitivity to rock exposure.
