FORENSIC ACCOUNTING: A TOOL FOR ENHANCING INVESTIGATIVE PROCESSES IN THE LEGAL CORRIDOR

Forensic accounting has emerged as an important discipline at the intersection of accounting, auditing, investigation, law, and financial analysis. The increasing sophistication of financial crimes, corporate fraud, money laundering, corruption, tax evasion, asset misappropriation, and other economic offences has created a growing need for professionals who can trace financial transactions, identify irregularities, quantify financial losses, and present financial evidence in a manner that is understandable and admissible in legal proceedings. This article examines forensic accounting as a tool for enhancing investigative processes within the legal corridor. It looks the meaning and nature of forensic accounting, its relationship with legal investigations, the role of forensic accountants in gathering and analysing evidence, techniques employed in forensic investigations, the importance of digital and financial evidence, challenges confronting forensic accounting, and strategies for strengthening its application. The article argues that forensic accounting can significantly improve the quality, reliability, and efficiency of investigations when supported by competent professionals, appropriate legal frameworks, technological resources, and effective collaboration among investigators, lawyers, auditors, regulatory agencies, and the judiciary.
