The Use of Oyster Shell Dust and Corn Cob Ash as Mineral Filler in Asphalt
This study evaluates the use of oyster shell ash (OSA) and corn cob ash (CCA) as sustainable alternatives to conventional mineral fillers in asphalt mixtures. The physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures with varying OSA and CCA content (0-40%) were investigated through Marshall Stability tests. Results show improved stability (up to 21.7% increase) and flow (33.3% rise), indicating enhanced resistance to deformation and improved workability. The voids content decreased from 0.19% to 0.14%, suggesting better packing efficiency and potential durability gains. Stiffness fluctuated, decreasing at higher OSA and CCA content, highlighting the need for optimal content determination. Using waste materials like OSA and CCA promotes sustainability, reduces environmental impact, and offers a viable solution for improving asphalt performance, contributing to a more circular economy in construction.
