ASSESSMENT OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTIVENESS OF IRRIGATION PROJECTS: THE CASE STUDY OF BA RAI RIVER IN CAI LAY DISTRICT, TIEN GIANG PROVINCE

In recent years, climate change has had far-reaching consequences on the Mekong Delta in general and Cai Lay District in particular, resulting in salinization and fresh water shortage. This has become an obstacle to local agricultural development. The study aims to assess the socio-economic effectiveness of the irrigation schemes exploited and used along a section of the Ba Rai River in Cai Lay District, Tien Giang Province by analyzing influencing factors. Data was collected from 351 households located in Cam Son and Hoi Xuan communes and was analyzed using Descriptive Statistics, Cronbach’s Alpha test, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), factor score matrix analysis. Research’s findings identify four influencing factors including: Economy, Society, Quality of life, and Environment. Each factor’s observable variables are proportional to each factor in the model. The research also proposes several viable solutions for improving the socio-economic effectiveness of irrigation projects being used and exploited along a section of the Ba Rai river in Cai Lay District, Tien Giang Province.
